On every sidewalk and at every Halloween party, there are always cat ears and whiskered faces. With some homemade magic, you can create a stunning black cat costume that is truly one of a kind!

Three years ago, we made our girls black cat costumes that were cozy and perfect for younger girls. First, every cat needs ears. Really, in a pinch, you can just rock the cat ears, black clothes, and some makeup. Over the years, I have made more animal ears than I can count. I have made various kinds of cat ears, bunny ears, bat ears, fox ears, fawn ears, and unicorn ears.

In these cat costumes I made a few years ago, I show you one method for how to make cat ears. You can see how to make a really easy type of animal ears in this video tutorial…. For this new cat costume for teens, I made an even prettier style of cat ears.

The method I used for these plush cat ears is more refined and simplified. After making all those ears, I have discovered what works and looks best. I plan to update this post with a video tutorial.

But in the meantime, here is how I make these pretty cat ears. Draw a simple template for your cat ears on paper. Basically, you just need to draw a triangle that extends down about an inch at the bottom.A bay, arched or corner window setup requires a bendable curtain rod. It can be difficult to find one to match your exact window measurements, and a custom made rod is typically expensive.

However, a savvy do-it-yourself homeowner can make a bendable curtain rod that fulfills her needs and do so at a fraction of the cost of a custom-made rod.

Cut two sections of hollow, metal curtain rod with a pipe cutter. Cut these sections equal in length to the required wall measurement less 3 inches per corner.

For example, for a corner window rod with a required length of 40 inches on each side of the corner, cut two rods 37 inches. If the rod is for a bay, cut the outside section the section length less one corner reduction, cut the center section less two corner reductions.

Cut one inch piece of clear plastic pipe for the corner with the shears. Choose pipe that fits inside the curtain rod. Pipe measurements are listed as the width of the opening of the pipe and the thickness of the walls alter the size of pipe required to fit into the curtain rod.

The curtain rod must, therefore, have an interior diameter that matches the outer diameter of the plastic pipe. Insert one end of the plastic pipe into one end of the curtain rod, insert the other end into the remaining piece of curtain rod. Leave 6 inches of exposed pipe between the two. Mount your chosen brackets on the wall. Install a bracket at each end of each rod location. The outside bracket is typically installed two to three inches from the outside rod end, depending on the finial and design choice.

Install one bracket on each side of the corner; position them far enough away from the corner that they do not touch. A guideline is to place the bracket away from the corner a distance equal to the depth of the bracket. The depth is the measurement from the bottom of the base of the bracket to the front of the bracket. Thread the rod pocket, grommet or tab curtain onto the rod, arrange the gathers or folds evenly and set the rod in place, adjusting the curtain over the brackets.

Install the finials to complete the corner bendable rod project. Measure the perimeter of the arch and cut a piece of clear plastic pipe to this measurement plus the required finial mounting allowance.

Verify your identity

Plastic pipe is bendable, is typically clear and can be cut with shears. This pipe is quite strong and maintains its shape well while going through an arch.

The diameter of the pipe is up to you depending on the size of the window -- just as you would choose a larger curtain rod for a large window, choose a larger diameter pipe for a large window. Choose finials that screw in place over the end of the pipe. The required mounting allowance is the amount of pipe the finial covers when in place.

Spray paint the rod your chosen color. Install a curtain bracket every six or eight inches along the perimeter. Choose closed-end brackets -- they have a circular end and the rod slides through the opening.

Install one finial onto the rod. Thread the pipe through the brackets and attach the remaining finial. Set the bracket installation screws, securing the rod in place.

How to Make Your Own Bendable Curtain Rod

To make it easier to shape the wire in two of the same shapes, draw the outline of the shape of the wing on a large piece of paper. From my research, I wanted my wings to curve in at the top and slightly at the bottom. You can see I scored the top every 1 inch and the bottom a few times 2 inches apart.If you are going to a costume party for Halloween, you might want to make a costume of your own. If you are going as a devil, a cat, a dinosaur, or any number of animals, you will need to make a costume tail.

Making a tail will take you a little time, but may not cost anything, depending on what you already have. The basic design for a costume tail will be described here. After the initial frame is built, however, you can branch off on your own and customize it as you please.

Take the wire and cut it to a length that will be long enough for the entire tail while still being able to encircle your waist. The wire should be of a thicker gauge—thick enough that it holds its shape without being inordinately heavy. Once the length is determined, bend it at one end into the approximate shape of the tail. It should be S-shaped, but the costume might call for it to be Z-shaped or otherwise.

This is where customization comes into play. At the other end of the tail you need to make it into a circle to go around your waist. There are a couple of ways you can do this. With the pliers, bend it into a circle while holding it in position. Once you get the approximate shape you can either twist the open end back around the wire, closing off the circle, or you can leave it open. If you close it off, the hoop will have to be big enough to fit over your head or be pulled up from your ankles while staying put around your hips.

If you leave it open, you must able to run it through belt loops when you are ready to don your costume. Take your foam rubber and cut it into long strips. They should be thin yet thick enough to wrap once around the wire to pad it.

This will take a little time with the hot glue gun, but glue the foam to itself for the entire length of the wire. This will enclose the wire and build up the girth of the tail. Another customization feature is to use thicker foam rubber depending on your needs. If you plan on threading it through belt loops, pad it lightly.

With the foam rubber, cut out any shape you wish for the end of the tail.

How to Make Costume Wings

If you are going as a devil, maybe it will be a spade. If you are a stegosaurus, maybe you want some spikes. Glue the shapes onto the end of the tail with hot glue.

When gluing foam with hot glue, squeeze the glued pieces or ends together for at least 10 seconds once the glue has been applied and make sure the glue is hot. You can use colors and patterns of fabric to decorate your tail, as well as bits like sequins or gems. If the waist hoop will be visible when your costume is complete, do not forget to decorate that as well and make it blend into the rest of the tail.

Your tail is now complete and made exactly to order. Any Halloween costume that calls for a tail can be customized from this basic design.
